Slate Tile Cleaning and Care

Slate is a clay-like material that can be recognized by its thin, sheet-like structure. It contains illite, quartz and sometimes traces of calcite and mica. Slate tile can come in hundreds of colors.

When it is first installed, small pieces and flakes break off of the tile, which is called "spalling." This can be managed by sweeping daily with a flat, dry mop or a vacuum cleaner WITHOUT a beater bar.

If the slate tile is installed in a very high traffic area, such as a commercial property, sweeping several times a day is recommended. To limit dirt tracking, use placemats at entry ways (just make sure they don't have a rubber or jute backing as these can bleed into the slate and cause difficult or impossible to remove stains.

Additional Care Tips:

  • Do not use oil-treated dust mops on slate
  • When dust mopping, only run the dust mop in one direction (to avoid spreading dirt)
  • Do not get dust mop wet. Dry the floor (if it is wet) before dust mopping
  • Damp mop once a week (for most residential floors) and twice a week for light commercial use. Heavy commercial traffic may require daily damp mopping.
